The present invention relates generally to immunotherapy and in particular to cell lines of recombinant human cytokines. The present invention also relates to the use of such cell lines in immunotherapy. In recent years, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become an increasingly popular form of contraception. The basic idea is to expose the female to a sperm that has been stripped of its membrane coating by sonication. The resulting sperm, now completely soluble, can be put back into the female, where it fuses with the egg. The use of immunotherapy in the treatment of cancer has also gained acceptance in recent years. In some cases, immunotherapy has been found to be effective to a level higher than chemotherapy. For example, B. J. Coates et al. (Nature, 288:584-586, 1980) reported that immunization with a heat shock protein (HSP)-96 cancer vaccine that has been modified so as to express an MHC class I antigen, can inhibit the growth of mice injected with a human tumor cell line. In addition, the expression of MHC class I antigens has been shown to increase the sensitivity of some cancers to immunotherapy (E. M. Hersh et al., Nature, 283:447-449, 1980). Some of the mechanisms for tumor immunity include, but are not limited to, macrophage activation, natural killer cell activation, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, complement-dependent cytotoxicity, and lymphokine-activated cellular cytotoxicity. However, the effects of these mechanisms in vivo depend not only on the presence of effector cells, but also on the "signals" they receive. These signals include the delivery of cytotoxic molecules such as TNF or MHC class I antigens. These signals are responsible for selective activation of a particular cell type, and consequently, result in the secretion of macrophage activating factors, natural killer cell activating factors, complement activating factors, or lymphokines that activate cytotoxic cells. Cytokines have been used in the treatment of some cancers. For example, IL-2, which is the product of activated T cells and is effective in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) (C. A. Koner et al., Prog. Clin. Biol. Res., 227:45-55, 1985), has been used in conjunction with autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. It has also been used in the
